Attachment Point: The pilot ladder must be secured to a strong point on the ship's deck, independent of any winch reel, and at least 91.5 cm inboard from the ship's side.
Securing Method: Use dedicated securing method required by company or port.
Ladder Condition: Before each use, inspect the ladder for signs of wear, damage, or deterioration. Ensure all steps are horizontal and evenly spaced.
Magnets: In some cases, magnets or other securing devices may be used to hold the ladder against the ship's side, especially when traditional securing points are unavailable. However, these should be used in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and not as a substitute for proper securing methods.
Pilot Ladder Extension: Must extend at least 2 meters above the lower platform of the accommodation ladder in combination arrangements.
Accommodation Ladder Platform: Should be at least 5 meters above the sea level and secured to the ship's side.
Step Spacing: Steps should be equally spaced, not less than 310 mm and not more than 350 mm apart.
Local Regulations: Some ports or terminals may have additional requirements regarding pilot ladder arrangements, including specific usage periods or strength tests. For example, certain Australian ports require pilot ladders to be used for no more than 30 months and to undergo strength tests if this period is exceeded.
Communication: Always check with the local port authority or terminal operator for any specific requirements or guidelines before arrival.
Use a combination ladder when the freeboard exceeds 9 meters.
Secure the pilot ladder to a strong point on the deck, at least 91.5 cm inboard.
