Ballast Water Exchange — North Sea & Baltic

Ballast Water Exchange — North Sea & Baltic

Intro

Sailing in the North Sea or Baltic Sea? This short post gives you the simple version of ballast water exchange (D-1), plus a free PDF you can keep on the bridge.

Who it’s for

Masters, Chief Officers, and OOWs who want a quick, practical reminder before planning or executing ballast operations.

What’s inside the PDF

  • D-1 vs D-2 in plain words (exchange vs treatment)

  • Where exchange should happen (incl. the designated North Sea exchange area)

  • “No route deviation required” principle and how to document exceptions

  • Whole tanks only (not partial inside one tank)

  • What to record in the Ballast Water Record Book

Quick rules in simple terms

  • D-1 = exchange (≥95% volume); D-2 = treatment (type-approved system).

  • Where: use the designated North Sea exchange area when applicable; otherwise follow distance/depth guidance or designated areas on your track.

  • No deviation: you shouldn’t alter your voyage just to reach an exchange area—log what you do and why.

  • Whole tanks: plan time and track to complete full exchanges; do not start what you can’t finish.

  • Record keeping: keep your Ballast Water Record Book tidy—times, positions, tanks, method, and any reasons for not fully complying.

  • Safety first: never compromise ship/crew safety or stability to meet exchange targets.

How to use this guide onboard 'Ballast Water Exchange'

  1. Download the PDF and save it in your bridge “Docs” folder.

  2. Check your ship/voyage standard (D-1 or D-2) before you pump.

  3. If exchanging: pick tanks you can complete within compliant waters; document everything clearly.
